Anyone who knows me very well knows that I have a tendancy to burst into little bits of singing when I get excited. Now, I'm not a trained vocalist, nor do I sound all that wonderful. Yet, I let it bubble out.
Lately, I have decided to war against darkeness and depression (two things that seem to be ever present in mid-winter) with song, praise, and thankfulness. Where there is light there is no darkness!
I'm not easily riled nor quick to anger. However, when it comes to fighting for good, I put on my warrior girl outfit and kick hiney! Look out bad guys, I'm coming out with my fists up! No more sad girl blues with my coffee. My girlfriends or kids having a bad day? Well, you better be ready for a whole load of positive, because I'm letting it all out. If I hear of someone who's giving up on their dreams, I'm right there with my sword of encouragement and spear of prayer!
You might might wonder how in the world this works. It's like this: I start to sing when the bathroom mirror speaks evil words to me, when I have bills that snap and snarl, or when loneliness tries to suck me into the mire of self-pity. I sing and sing until all darkness vanishes.
What do I sing? Sometimes I make up my own stuff. Please, don't ask! Often I start with the Doxolgy. Yup, the old song we used to sing at the Thanksgiving dinner table or at church service:
I sing it over and over again, making it better each time. What does this do? It focuses me on God, I create something beautiful for Him. My praise and prayers are like a sweet perfume to Him. And, when my heart is lifted, the darkness goes. Only light is left.
Once I'm in the light and know that my heart is no longer filled with the darkness of fear, loathing, or depression, I can move on to fighting for justice, inspiration, creativity, and all the good and powerful things I am meant to do.
Praise and gratitude lifted to God, and ability to make choices, are exceedingly powerful tools against the evils of darkness and depression. Pick up your sword and spear, a join me by becoming a Warrior for Light!
With singing, gratitude, and prayer, we can change the world!
